Born in Shanghai in 1935, Hsiao Chin studied in Taipei. He travelled to Europe in 1956 where he stayed and worked in Barcelona, Paris, London and Milan. He was one of the founders of the first Chinese abstract art movement, the Ton Fan group in 1957 in Taipei.
In 1959, he moved to Milan, the centre of the artistic avant-garde, where he met artists including L. Fondata and P. Manzoni, and began exhibiting at Giorgio Marconi’s. He had an active role in the foundation of other artistic movements such as the international movement ‘Punto’ in 1961 and the international movement ‘Surya’ in 1978 in Milan. In 1969 he taught painting and drawing at Southampton College of Long Island University – New York; in 1971/1972 visual communication at the European Institute of Design in Milan; in 1972 painting and drawing at the Lousiane State University in Baton Rouge – Louisiana; in 1983/1984 artistic anatomy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino; in 1984/85 decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Turin and after 1985 engraving techniques at Brera Academy in Milan. He currently lives and works between Milan and Taiwan.
